John Gilbert

Born John Cecil Pringle, John Gilbert was an American silent film actor, screenwriter and director. He starred opposite Greta Garbo in several romantic features in the late 1920s. Gilbert's career declined when silent pictures transitioned to talkies. Some say his success waned due to interpersonal and political issues within the business, while others say his vocal tone and diction was not up to early Hollywood’s standard for how a man should sound.
