José Torres Guardia

BiographySpanish sculptor José Torres Guardia is known for seeing sculptures as a synthesis drawing expressed in a few essential lines. Born in Valencia, Spain in 1932, he studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia and studied at the Spanish Academy in Rome for the 1956-57 academic year. Following his studies, he moved to Madrid and served in the university militias in San Sebastián. While there, he met the then prince Don Juan Carlos I, who commissioned a bust. Following his time in the military, Torres Guardia moved to Paris before moving back to Madrid. He began getting more commissions for his work from around the globe, which afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively and his work is in collections in Germany, the United States, France, England, Italy, Mexico, Venezuela, and Columbia.
