Alice Kagawa Parrott1929 Honolulu, Hawaii - 2009 Santa Fe, New Mexico
After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 1952, Alice Kagawa Parrott attended the Cranbook Academy where she studied weaving with Marianne Strengell and ceramics with Maija Grotell. In 1954 she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she joined the art department at the University of New Mexico teaching weaving and ceramics. In New Mexico, she was exposed to Native American and Mexican traditions and began to incorporate this local influence into her practice including spinning her own wool and making her own dyes with local natural materials. Parrott described her process as using traditional techniques to create innovative approaches to making art.
