Michael Costelloborn 1955 Hudson Valley, New York; lives Santa Fe, New Mexico

Michael Costello’s interest in printmaking began with his study of lithography at the University of New Hampshire. After graduating with a BFA from the Art Institute of San Francisco, Costello came to New Mexico in 1981 with hopes of finding a job in a printshop. He connected with Ron Adams, who had founded Hand Graphics after working as the master printer at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles. Costello waited about six months for an opening at the shop. After working for Adams for five years, Costello bought the shop from him in 1987. Hand Graphics has a range of presses and executes a variety of printing types including etching, lithography, monotypes, photogravure, and relief prints. Monotypes are of particular interest for Costello, who enjoys the versatility of the technique. Costello has worked with artists from around the country including John Biggers, Robert Colescott, Nathan Oliveira, and many more. [Printer's Proof]
