BiographyMedallic Art Company was a private mint founded in Manhattan in 1903 by Henri Weil, a French sculptor, and his brother, Felix. The brothers repourposed presses that were originally used to create die-struck ornaments for handbags to make medals, academic awards, medallions, chairs of office, ceremonial maces, and university medals. The company moved to Danbury, Connecticut in 1972 and then to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1991, and then to Dayton, Nevada in 1997. It was purchased by Northwest Territorial Mint in 2009, which in bankrupt in 2016. After the bankruptcy proceedings the archives of Medallic art and many of its pre-1998 dies were aquired by the American Numismatic Society while the rest of the company was purchased by Medalcraft Mint, Inc. Among the medals Medallic Art Company created were inaugural medals for eleven US presidents and awards including the Pulitzer Prize, the Peabody Award, the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott medal.
