DescriptionThis tin, embossed bucket encompasses a cylindrical form throughout, and includes a curved handle spanning from each side on the upper portion. The circular, bottom panel of the interior of the bucket depicts a series of circles, getting progressively smaller towards the center, creating an effect reminiscent of a spiral design. Similarly, the other side of the panel, facing the ground, illustrates the other side of the likely embossed, spiral-like design. Moving to the bucket's outer surface, "AT & SF RY" is embossed on one side, referring to the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. Founded in 1859 by Cyrus K. Holliday (1826-1900) and popularized during the late nineteenth century, the railroad company contributed to the westward expansion and forward-moving regional progress, ultimately playing a significant role in the restructuring of transportation networks, shaping the Southwestern cultural identity. Manufactured by the railroad company, this bucket likely served a variety of convenient purposes, from helping with railroad maintenance by acting as a vessel for materials to helping with the transportation of equipment and supplies. On View
