DescriptionFour women stand in a row in front of a man who has his hand over the head of one of the women during a beauty pageant. Two other men sit on horses to the left. There is a crowd in the background. They are watching an event at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico.A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "The three-day celebration held annually at Gallup, New Mexico has many interesting high-lights, of which one is the beauty contest. Here the inner has been picked and she will reign over the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. The brightly colored costumes and unique jewelry worn by the Indian women are symbols that they still conform to the ideas and rituals which they adhered to before the coming of the white man four centuries ago."
