DescriptionThis is a boiler plate label from a freight locomotive engine used by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad had a profound impact on New Mexico, connecting the state to the rest of the country, facilitating trade, and enabling the exchange of goods and culture across the United States. The plate is made entirely of brass, with engraved text on the front reading: "BLW CLASS 62162 / STEAM TEST 330 LBS. / WATER TEST 414 LBS. / ALLOWED PRESSURE 310 LBS." On the back of the plate is the number "5010." The donor's father, John L. Fertig, worked for the Santa Fe Railway, beginning in the tank (tender or coal car) shop before becoming the machine shop foreman. He later served as the master mechanic in Clovis, New Mexico, before relocating to Albuquerque in 1932, where he continued working until 1942. This object is significant because it acknowledges the critical role the Santa Fe Railroad played in New Mexico, particularly in the lives of the state’s mechanics and tradespeople.
