DescriptionThis oil lamp, originating from the late nineteenth century, is constructed of brass. Dating back to ancient times, a variety of oil lamps have emerged, notably the Argand lamp and the kerosene oil lamp. Oil lamps similar to this one gained popularity throughout the nineteenth century due to their usage in homes, often incorporated as decorations, while traveling, within the mining industry, and more. This oil lamp features a ventilated base at the bottom and encompasses an overall shape reminiscent of a vase or decorative vessel. Sitting above the base is a rounded, cylindrical portion that supports a wider, rounded part towards the top of the lamp. The top of the lamp is narrower and showcases a wick-burning mechanism, and what likely appears to be a removable portion for refilling. Analyzing the lamp's design, it is likely to be classified under the Hitchcock-style established by the manufacturing of lamps by the Hitchcock Lamp Company during the late 1800s. Characterized by a brass construction, decorative form, and ability to operate without a chimney, Hitchcock lamps showcased the evolving technological innovations following the Industrial Revolution, contributing to the growing development of light mechanisms leading to further widespread usage.
