John Nichols created a suite of 21 calaveras to use as illustrations for his book The Magic Journey, part of his New Mexico Trilogy which concludes with The Milagro Beanfield War. The Magic Journey follows the story of the fictional town of Chamisaville in the Southwest. In the book, a bus loaded with dynamite accidentally explodes, uncovering a hot spring which is developed, bringing tourists and income for a wealthy few. Nichols used 8 of the images in his chapter headings and his calaveras represent character types rather than specific characters.
