Tamarind #1 features three independent "figures" which don’t resemble any living creature we are familiar with and yet seem to portray distinct characters with independent personalities. John Altoon is best known for his figurative drawings depicting vaguely botanical and biological forms. His work as a commercial illustrator along with influences from the abstract expressionist movement fused into a definitive style. Tamarind #1 was printed during Altoon’s time at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop before it moved from Los Angeles to Albuquerque.
