16. An important part of the "educational industry" in Socorro is the N.M. Institute of Mining and Technology. Besides Socorro College, established 1889, the Institute has 2 other divisions: State Bureau of Mines & Mineral Resources; and Research and Development Center.

17. The Research and Development Building! This division conducts geophysical research of thunderstorms, micro-earthquakes, ground water hydrology, & related fields.

18. The Research Division also maintains a large explosives test area where special classified work is done for the U.S. Navy and other agencies.
