Indigenous Art, Culture, and Community: Works from the Ruth and Sydney Schultz Collection

Glenn Gomez learned how to make pottery from his mother, Cordelia Gomez and the two often harvested clay together. Gomez continues to gather his own micaceous clay, which is found in northern New Mexico and was historically used to make cookware. The mica in the clay is evident in the small shiny flecks visible in this pot. The lid and the main vessel of the pot were fired in two different environments—the base was done in a reduction firing (reduced oxygen) and the lid was done in an oxidation firing. Gomez’s finely crafted pots are made in his own unique style that expands on the tradition passed down by his mother.
