In 1975, T.C. Cannon actively tackled new media and concepts. He completed a color woodcut series in collaboration with the master Japanese woodcutter Kentaro Maeda and printer Matashiro Uchikawa, both extremely well respected in Japan. Cannon was intrigued by the tradition and division of labor in the Japanese process. The Japanese method also fit his interest in color.
Collector #5 is a brilliant representation of Cannon’s oeuvre and one of his most famous prints. It is infused with personal references, including the wicker chair reminiscent of the chairs at La Posada Hotel in Santa Fe, which Cannon would frequent, and the Van Gogh painting hanging on the wall, a nod to one of his artistic influences. The figure of the chief is based on a photograph by W. H. Jackson circa 1870 of Peta-Lashara, a Pawnee Chief. Cannon’s artistic career reached beyond visual art into music and poetry and tragically ended in a car accident when the artist was only thirty-one years old.
