Clarence E. Redman

C.E. Redman was raised in Colorado and served in WWI before working as a brakeman for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. He married Bess Curry and they had two children, before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Redman worked in the advertising department for the Santa Fe New Mexican. The Redmans moved to Albuquerque in 1928, where C. E. worked for Ward Hicks Advertising Agency before setting up his own advertising agency in 1933. After serving in WWII, Redman set up a commercial photography studio on E. Gold Avenue and photographed community events throughout Albuquerque. Because of his work in advertising, he had close ties to the Albuquerque newspapers and made a point of identifying his subjects and providing background details and quotes, adding value to his photographs. By the late 1950s, he was a leader in the field and attended national conferences as the New Mexico delegate for commercial photographers. C.E. Redman died in Albuquerque on January 12, 1970. He is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery. In a tribute, the Albuquerque Tribune wrote: “For many years, Redman was probably Albuquerque’s leading commercial photographer. In that role, he photographed countless school students, brides and grooms and others. And he photographed them well, for Redman was a skillful cameraman. […]We have lost a friend. And Albuquerque has lost one too, as well as a fine photographer and an outstanding member of the community.”
