Jose Rafael Aragonca. 1783-90 Santa Fe, New Mexico - 1862 Pueblo Quemado (now Córdova), New Mexico

Santero José Rafael Aragón was a prolific santero who was active between 1820 and 1862. He lived in the woodworker’s district of Santa Fe, near St. Francis cathedral. Aragón completed work in many northern New Mexican churches; Bainbridge Bunting collected this very large Christ on the Cross in Rodarte, New Mexico, near Peñasco.
