Georgia O'Keeffe

1887 Sun Prairie, Wisconsin - 1986 Santa Fe, New Mexico
BiographyBorn in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in 1887, Georgia O'Keeffe decided at the age of ten to become an artist. From that time on she studied art, first with private lessons and later at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1912 O'Keeffe began to teach art in Amarillo, Texas, where she was greatly influenced by the barren landscape. She returned to New York several years later and it was in the city that she met and later married Alfred Stieglitz, photographer and champion of modernist art. In the summer of 1929, she made her first extended visit to New Mexico, and continued to spend most of her summers here until 1949, when she moved to Abiquiu. She died in Santa Fe in 1986.
