Kamal Boullata was a Palestinian artist, writer, and art historian born in 1942 in Jerusalem. He graducated from the Accademia di Belle Arti, Rome in 1965 with a degree in fine art. He then earned his MFA from the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, DC, in 1971. He lived in the United State (1968-1992), Morocco (1993-1996), and Menton, France (1997-2012). He died in Berlin in 2019, where he moved 2012. Boullata mainly worked in silkscreen, with some painting. He often used Kufic script, a form of Arabic calligraphy, in his work. Also known for his studies on Palastian art, he received the Fulbright Senior Scholar Fellowship to research Islamic art in Morocco in 1993 and 1994, and in 2001 he recieved the Ford Foundation Research Grant, New York, to research the origins of painting in Palestine. Boullata's art works are in collections around the world including the British Museum, Alhambra Islamic Museum in Granada, and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.
