J. Michael Bear, born James Byrnes, was born in 1933 in Tohatchi, New Mexico to a Lakota father, James Byrnes Sr., and Acoma-Laguna mother, Margaret Serricino. He attended the Albuquerque Indian School, graduting in 1955. He is known for his drawings that are highlighted with acrylic paints. His works is in collections across the United States, including the Smithsonian Institute, Museum of the American Indian in New York and the Heard Museum in Chicago.
