Born and raised in Glendale, California, Adams graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he later joined the faculty as an assistant professor of art history and lithography. During his tenure at UCLA he organized the first lithography exhibits at the university's art gallery. In 1961, following chairmanships of the art departments at the University of Kentucky and, subsequently, the University of Florida, Adams was appointed Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico of which he was associated for twenty-five years. In 1960, Adams co-founded the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles (reestablished at UNM in 1970) where he served as its associate director until the spring of 1985.

In 1982 Adams was honored as the outstanding art educator and administrator for the year by the National Council of Art Administrator's. Over the years his teaching and published work about art and printmaking have instructed and inspired countless artists. His paintings, prints, and drawings are in public, private, and corporate collections throughout the world.
