DescriptionMedium-sized Acoma polychrome pottery jar. High shoulder. White slip and black painted designs from the top to the middle and lower sections. Red designs also found along the upper band of the design at the neck also with a thick lower band of red slip. Constructed from coils of clay layered and smoothed with the hands or a smoothing tool. Use of a "puki" (mold) for the lower part is not apparent. The neck is relatively long (~9cm) with wide bulbous shoulders that taper to a thinner base. The top rim is also thinner in diameter to the center (~18.5 cm). The top band of the design is framed by black framing lines (an upper thick line and lower thin line) around the lip and shoulders. The design consists of arrow-like motifs surrounded with feather-like curves and scrolls. The tail of the arrow is designed with thin red lines, the lip has thin black lines in the cross-hatch design. The thick center band is designed with large thin petaled flowers alternating in horizontal and vertical placement with large squares. The back grand painted 1/2 solid black and the other 1/2 is painted with thin black stripes. The third band is a repetitive black parallelogram leaning on one another split at the center with a thin line of white. Two thin framing lines separate the [unreadable] from the red bottom. There are no spirit breaks in any of the upper, middle, or lower framing lines. The bottom is indented for carrying on the head. The interior upper rim is also painted with red slip.
