    DescriptionAn early eighteenth century Hispanic New Mexican arm chair, collected from Taos Pueblo; possibly made at Pecos. Wood, leather, paint, iron, bison, buffalo hide. Open mortise and tenon construction, hand adzed and possibly hand hewn. Arms are carved with beveled outside edges, and notched front and back where arms meet leg rails. The seat is made from two unequal pieces of wood, butt jointed and pegged to the frame. The back of the chair is made from one piece of wood covered with leather strips attached with large, round head, bronze ornamental nails. Rows of black painted circles surrounded by rectangular black painted border on front of front and back rails, on the outside of the front and back rails, arms and side stretchers, and inside of arms and front posts. The top of the back posts are step [info unreadable] for missing finials. Rows of fairly regularly spaced nail holes along the sides of arms, perimeter of seat, and inside of front posts. Arms, seat, and front posts may have been covered with fabric or leather at some point. Bottom of seat branded with "M."
