    DescriptionThe original shrine, erected in Tepeyac outside of Mexico City after Juan Diego's vision in 1531, eventually became outgrown and damaged by flood. The sacred tilma (Juan Diego's muslin cape) was temporarily moved to the cathedral in Mexico City, and a new basilica was constructed in 1709. This painting features Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe surrounded by flowers and cartouches illustrating the story of Juan Diego, the shrine and the basilica. The image is revered in both Mexico and New Mexico showing viewers how religion can become part of a cultural identity.
