Label Text:Louis Ribak was a social realist painter and member of the “Taos Moderns,” a group of artists who all arrived in Taos in the 1940s, many having studied contemporary European and American modernist art. Fellow members included Ribak’s wife, Bea Mandelman, Agnes Martin, Earl Stroh, and Emil Bisttram, among others. In this early portrait, Ribak visualizes himself in the act of painting his own image. The viewer seems to be glimpsing into his studio from behind his mirror.
