DescriptionStriped Rio Grande blanket, frazada, Classic Period, with "manitas" (also known as "palmas").
This banded blanket features a Saltillo design known by the Trujillo family as manitas (little hands), small handlike elements that are woven into the stripes. They are also sometimes known as palmas. The individual motifs are woven with different colors in the upper and lower halves, a technique seen in Saltillo sarape designs.
Because of the scarcity of cochineal-dyed red yarns during the time the blanket was made, only a small amount of red appears in the design field. The lighter colors of red surrounded by differently colored beige yarns are later repairs.
