DescriptionRetablos are altar pieces that depict saints or other religious figures that are carved and painted usually through the medium of wood. This piece depicts San Felipe de Neri with a white dove in the upper right corner and flowers along the left of him. San Felipe de Neri was a saint whose name was used in renaming practices by colonizers of the "New World." Renaming meant to erase the history of the land prior to the arrival of these Spanish forces and claim land as theirs. San Felipe de Neri was a name that was used to honor the King Philip of Spain and would expand past this time period to continue to be a name carried into schools, plazas, and public art.
