Label Text:For much of his career, George McNeil alternated between two very different artistic
approaches. Some of his works exemplified a structural and cubist approach, while other works were more free, figurative and expressionist. Later, he realized that he had embarked upon a process that would ultimately allow him to simultaneously "embrace formal and expressionist art values." McNeil’s new found figurative Expressionism changed directions again in the 1970s as his figures began express anxiety, psychological shock, and other states of mind.
