The painting depicts the corner of First avenue and Railroad (Central) Avenue, Albuquerque, New Mexico, circa 1882, looking south on First Street. A horse car is headed west on Central. The oxen are on the site of the Y.M.C.A., which was built in 1883. The corner building housed a hotel, the "Sturgis", a prominent name in early Albuquerque.
