Why are streets named after people?

This map was donated to the Museum by a descendant of the Armijo family, wealthy merchants who owned property in both Old and New Albuquerque.

The neighborhood southeast of the railroad tracks was named after German immigrant Franz Huning, who developed Huning's Highland Addition there. Many streets in the Highland Addition are named after prominent citizens, including Huning's own son.

Whose names do you recognize on this map? What family name would you give to the street on which you live?
