DescriptionGrape and copper press with two slatted barrels and a drain board underneath. The supports are painted green and there are other parts such as a wheel attached to the press. This press belonged to the Joseph Tondre family of Los Lunas. The Tondres immigrated to the United States in the 1840s from the region of Alsace-Lorraine in France. They arrived in the territory in 1864, and established a trading post on the east side of Isleta Pueblo. The family purchased land in Los Lentes, north of Los Lunas, and began making wine. In a good year, the family could produce 87,000 gallons and Jesuit priests in Old Town, if they ran out of grapes for making wine, would purchase them from the Tondres. The land where the vineyards once grew is now the site of the Katherine Gallegos Elementary School in Los Lunas.
