Description18. St. Francis Cathedral was built under the direction of Archbishop John Baptiste Lamy, made famous in Willa Cather's book, "Death Comes for the Archbishop." The church was rebuilt 2 or 3 times. Of unusual interest in the present building is the Star of David in the keystone of the arch at main entrance, as a thank you to Jewish merchants who contributed to the building. Oldest representation of the Madonna in the U.S., brought by Spanish proneers, may be seen in the North Chapel.

19. A charming little Gothic Chapel, built by Sisters of Loretto, the first religious women to come to N.M. is our Lady of Light Chapel. This is its altar.

20. The Chapel intimately connected with life & work of Archbishop Lamy, houses the fabled "Miraculous Staircase," wgucg us a masterpiece of carpentry & design, with a fascinating legend about mysterious carpenter who built it, then left without leaving name or bill.
