DescriptionWooden cigar box with tax stamps attached to it. The box has a hinged lid. Across the top of the lid is stamped: “Affidavit” with an image of a medal and ribbon below it. Below this is stamped “FACTORY NO. 10 DIST. N.M. 50.” Running vertically from the lid to the bottom of the box, on both the left and right ends of the box, are deteriorating tax stamps. The stamp on the left wraps all the way around the box. Across the narrow front side of the box, the letters “H. W.” are stamped. Along the narrow right end of the box and extending onto the lid, there is a lithographed label depicting a diploma with a red ribbon around it and a gold medal with a ribbon. In gold lettering over this image is the word “Affidavit.” This same lithographed label is glued or taped to the inside of the lid. Along the bottom of this inner label it says, “Wm STEINER SONS & CO. 116-122 E. 14TH ST. N.Y.” and below this, “HENRY WESTERFELD, Manufacturer, Albuquerque, N. Mex.” On the underside of the box, there is another label that reads, “HENRY WESTERFELD/Factory No. 10, District of N. M./Notice: The manufacturer of the cigars herein/contained has complied with all the require-/ments of law. Every person is cautioned not to/use either this box for cigars again, or the stamp/thereon again, nor to remove the contents of/this box without destroying said stamp, under/the penalties provided by law in such cases.”
