Julian Duran, the subject of this portrait was a Hispanic boy who lived with his family in upper Taos Canyon. An only child, Julian spent many long hours in the mountains tending his father’s dairy goats. William Herbert Dunton knew the family and asked permission for Julian to model for this painting. Dunton painted this ambitious canvas for juried exhibitions. It was displayed across the country from the time of its creation until it was purchased in the early 1930s by wealthy oilman William McFadden.
