Josef Albers is one of the most influential figures in post–World War II American art. This painting belongs to a legendary series of nearly a thousand works in various media titled Homage to the Square. The format was consistent: a series of nested squares acting as a mathematical constant to an infinite variety of possible value and color schemes. These colors subjectively affect each other, creating subtle illusions of space, motion, and optical vibration while also generating sensations and feelings that are hard to pin down.
