Absence is both a book and sculptural object made to memorialize the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The book uses simplicity and minimalism to express grief and reflection and provides a portable, non-architectural, non-site-specific memorial to the towers. There is no text, but two identical cut squares represent the footprint of the towers on each of the 120 pages referencing each floor of the building. A single pinhole in the first page stands in for the antenna on the top of one of the towers. Jeannie Meejin Yoon’s design exemplifies the potential of the blank page to evoke a powerful response.
