Barbara Bock began working with large-scale paper installations in the mid-1970s. During that time, she was working as a commercial model, surrounded by photographer’s backdrop paper and becoming involved in set design with community theater. Bock fused these two influences together to transform large spaces with sculptural paper installations. The Remnant series was created with strips of photographer’s backdrop paper twisted into different formations and hung on the walls. Bock expanded into larger work with her Aeroforms series, free-hanging works installed around town in Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico campus, Albuquerque Convention Center, and UNM’s sports arena during the International Silent Hour for Peace in 1986. Bock’s sculptures highlight the materiality of the paper, which is fragile yet strong and flexible, creating visual rhythm and a sense of movement.
